Workshop Programs

Bobby is currently offering two workshop programs:

School Song Workshop/Concert Combo - this is a one-day workshop combined with Bobby's "Kid Have Character" Concert Program. Bobby works with students from the whole school to write, perform, and record a brand new school song! The school receives a CD with two versions of their new song: one with the whole school singing the song, and the other is a "karaoke" style backing track (no vocals) which can be used for the school to sing along to in future assemblies, etc. Read more below!

"Kids Have Character!" SongPower Workshop - this a 5-10 day workshop in which Bobby works with each class to write, perform, and record their very own song based on a positive value such as "courage", "respect", or "honesty". The song receives a CD with all the songs written, and the kids can download MP3's of their song off BobbyBoogaloo.com. Read more below!

School Song Workshop/Concert COMBO

Great value – get a Concert plus 1-day Workshop for less than the price of 2 concerts. Get a CD of your school song recordings and free MP3 downloads of the song on www.BobbyBoogaloo.com.

What It Is:
Full-day Concert AND Workshop Program.

The “Kids Have Character!” School Concert is the same as previous information you have received, based on Character Ed values with a fun, sing-along, dress-up-along spirit. The content in this format, however, is split up into portions of a morning and an afternoon concert on the same day.

The School Song Workshop: Incorporate and synthesize your school’s vision of positive values (and support your Character Ed program) into your very own School Song!

Write it! Sing it! Record it! Sing it again! And again!

We all write it together through the day, starting at the end of a first-thing morning Concert and finishing with the final song and entire school recording in another late-afternoon Concert. In-between, Bobby meets with each of the classes through a succession of mini-sessions, each class’ session moving the song forward to its completion!

Your school will sing out these positive messages again and again – an excellent way to reinforce your school’s values through the fun and powerful process of writing and singing a song!

Here’s a bit more:

Does your school have a “school song”?

Maybe it’s time to make one! A song is a very powerful and fun way for a group to “come together”. What is your school all about? What makes your school special? What is important to the students and staff? What messages are worth singing again and again in a kid-friendly, fun way?

Bobby Boogaloo has written over 300 songs and regularly writes up to eight new songs in a week with students in his SongPower Workshop (see and hear examples at www.BobbyBoogaloo.com).

In this 1 day mini-workshop, Bobby works with your school’s students (with staff input also) to write your very own “official” school song! And then – we sing it! And then – we record it! And then – sing it again and again!

Your new song will be professionally recorded and your school will receive a CD and MP3’s with three versions – a “live” recording of the whole school sing, one with just Bobby’s vocals, and one without vocals – karaoke style - so the kids can sing along to it at assemblies!

A song is a great way to “rally the troops” with positive message reinforcement and ideals - and even more so when they are involved in the process of writing it!

Sound like fun? You betcha’!

How it Works:

We start the day with a full school concert (about 45 min.) in gym. Bobby performs 3-4 songs (20-30 min.) and then begins the song process, introducing our intention and some ideas central to songwriting, and then leading an introductory BRAINGSTORMING session with the whole school. By the end of the concert we start to have a few ideas of where the song might go.

Bobby then begins further brainstorming mini-sessions with each class (or groups of two classes depending on size – 20-30 min. each session) through the day until 1:30 or so. Each class’ session builds upon the previous class’ session as the song comes alive, takes shape, and works its’ way to completion.

The day ends with another full-school concert (another 45 min. or so, starting at approx. 2:00) where the final song is introduced back to the school. We then practice performing it, and finally make a “live” recording of it with the whole school singing along! Bobby then ends the concert with 1-3 more songs from his concert program to finish off the day.

After the day is done… Bobby records two more versions of the song by himself – one with his vocals and one without vocals for the kids to sing along to again and again!

What You Get:

- Finished CD with your new song in three versions:

1. live with the whole school singing it (in final assembly);
2. with backing music and just Bobby singing it
3. with backing music only (no vocals) for the kids to sing along with (at assemblies, et cetera). School also receives an overhead transparency with typed lyrics to help sing-along.

Finally, an MP3 of the live version is posted and available for free download by school community at www.BobbyBoogaloo.com.

What Bobby Brings:

Professional recording equipment.

Live sound equipment.

What School Provides:

Overhead in gymnasium.

Access to gym for full day as recording and sound gear can be setup once and class sessions can be held in the gym.

"Kids Have Character!"
SongPower Workshop

This 5-10 day workshop program takes the school concert and goes a step further:  Bobby works with each class in the school to collectively write and perform a brand new song based upon a specific Character Education value, such as "respect" or "courage", as chosen by the class or teacher. Through the class' four sessions, the song is created, learned, and then performed by the class for the rest of the school at a final concert, as each class takes their turn showcasing their new masterpiece.

As well as this, the fourth session is "recording session" with the music room converted into a recording studio. The final recordings of each song are made into a CD for the school. As well as this, MP3s are created of each of the songs and are posted on BobbyBoogaloo.com where they are available for free download by the school community!

The fundemental idea behind this workshop is that the process of writing a song collectively is an excellent discussion vehicle for the chosen subject matter. Further, the individual process of writing a song that is included in the kids' take-home portion of this workshop is an excellent way for the student to think deeply about the subject matter. It is a very dynamic and engaging process to synthesize words, meaning and music together, and the final product becomes the students' "baby" - it comes alive!

Take-Home Projects: After each of the class' sessions with Bobby, individual students will have a fun takehome project to work on and discuss with their family or friends. These results will be integral to advancing each phase of the collective songwriting and performance process. Takehome projects include exploring the subject matter to create musical and lyrical verses and "hooks", and learning the song and song parts for performance.

Purpose
This fun and educational workshop will integrate Character, Music, and Language Education programs. Specifically:

1. it will facilitate deeper discussions on the core values outlined in Character Eduation - each class in the school will choose a value and create a song based on that value;

2. the discussion process will be explored and channeled creatively into the lyrical side of the songwriting process - generally with the main theme outlined into the chorus, and then further aspects of the chosen "value" explored in verses;

3. the lyric writing component will challenge the kids in the use of rhyming and rhythm structure, as well as melody;

4. as the creation of the song develops, the integration of music making with the lyric will make the song come alive;

5. finally, the song will be rehearsed and performed by the whole class at the final concert. Each class will perform their song for the rest of the school;

6. the concert will be recorded and produced, with MP3 files of each class' song and performance available for free download by the school community on www.BobbyBoogaloo.com.

Tech Requirements
Bobby Boogaloo comes equipped with his guitar, sound equipment for the concert, and laptop computer for recording and lyric writing.

It is appreciated if the school provides a dedicated room to make his "workshop" in during his stay, as well as an overhead projector and access to photocopier.

Finally, here’s a reference from a recent workshop:

"This April, Bobby Boogaloo presented his Kids with Character workshop at our school. It proved to be a very valuable and memorable experience for all involved.

His sessions with the students were well planned, and exceptionally productive considering their limited time together. He was well prepared and organized, and ready for the students when they arrived. His ability to balance the student’s enthusiasm, while attending to their creative process was impressive, and made their experience and unforgettable one.

The concerts Bobby presented to the school and community were an excellent showcase of his talent, and the student’s hard work. They were highly energetic, entertaining, and encouraged audience participation.

The Kids with Character workshop was a huge success at our school, and has touched the lives of many young children who will forever be indebted to him as he has “planted the seed” of music in their hearts and souls. The proof of this will be in the CD that they will now have as a memoir of their time with Bobby.

I would highly recommend his Kids with Character workshop to any school fortunate to be able to book him. It is reasonably priced, and well worth the money!"
